Tree Araucaria Heterophylla Type 5A, 10LP, 1.0 - 1.5M

The genus Araucaria contains about 19 species of similar trees for the southern hemisphere.  It has a graceful form, broad branches symmetrically arranged in horizontal layers, twined around an upright trunk. Each ring has five branches. In its native habitat, it can reach a height of 200 feet. Trees grown in coastal and Mediterranean areas typically grow 60-100 feet tall and 12-60 feet wide.

It grows well in open, sunny areas with plenty of space for its size in all types of good soil. Outdoors, raw roots can disrupt pruning, lift pavement, and create large waste cones. Some housing associations prohibit the use of large trees in the landscape due to the danger of falling trees. As a houseplant, small greens with sword-like leaves drape over deciduous branches in a herringbone pattern. Indoors, it prefers a bright, cool room (55-65°F) and grows up to 9 feet tall. Use moist, loamy, sandy, peaty, slightly acidic, well-drained potting soil. Mostly sun is preferred for dense symmetrical growth, but afternoon shade may be necessary to prevent wilting (yellowing) of the leaves. As a houseplant, it is very similar to the hot and dry environment found in most offices and homes. Consider a weekly or bi-weekly application of a dilute liquid fertilizer from spring through fall. Water regularly from spring to fall, avoiding too wet soil.
